SONGKRAN FESTIVAL

Songkran is also known as the "Water Festival". People believe that water will wash away bad luck. Songkran is the traditional Thai Buddhist New Year festival which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days or more.
Day 1 is "Maha Songkran Day" and marks the end of the old year.
April 14 is "Wan Nao" or "Wan Da" an auspicious day when everyone must be cheerful, and must not curse or behave badly. And of course try to soak everyone you see.
April 15 is "Wan Thaloeng Sonk" the beginning of the New Year. Each year we go down by the moat around the old city to join the fun. On some days we take a ute (that's Aussie for "pick-up") with drums of water in the back. It's awesome fun.
And then of course, there's the Miss Songkran Pageant...lovely
